Kids' Size Chart for Indian Children — Age-Wise Guide (0–10 Years)

If you've ever ordered kids' clothes online in India and ended up with a t-shirt that fits like a tent — or a dress that won't go past her shoulders — you're not alone. Sizing for Indian children isn't standardized. One brand's "3–4Y" is another brand's "2–3Y." Some use age, some use height, some use both. It's a mess.

This guide cuts through the confusion. We'll cover age-wise sizing, how to measure your child at home, when to size up, and the most common mistakes Indian parents make when buying clothes online.

How to measure your child at home (the 60-second method)

You don't need fancy tools. Get a measuring tape (the soft sewing kind) and a willing child. Bribery helps.

Height

Have your child stand against a wall, heels touching, head straight. Mark the top of their head with a pencil, then measure from floor to mark. Tip: do this barefoot in the morning — kids are slightly taller in the morning than evening.

Chest

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the chest, just under the armpits. Tape should be snug but not tight. Your child should breathe normally — if they hold their breath, you'll measure wrong.

Waist

The natural waist sits above the belly button. For bottomwear with elasticated waists (most kids' clothes), this measurement is more of a guide than a rule.

When to size up (and when to stay true)

Size up if:

  • Your child is in the top 25% for height for their age
  • You're buying outerwear (jackets, sweatshirts) — you'll want room for layering
  • Your child is at the older end of a size range (e.g., 5.5 years buying 5–6Y)
  • You're buying for a growing baby (0–2Y) and want 3 months of wear
  • The fabric is non-stretchy (denim, woven cotton)

Stay true to age if:

  • Buying co-ord sets, t-shirts, or anything in soft cotton
  • Your child is average build for their age
  • You want the fit to look right immediately, not in three months
  • You're buying for a special occasion (birthday, festival, photo)

The 5 most common sizing mistakes Indian parents make

1. Buying by age alone

Two 4-year-olds can be 8 cm apart in height. Age is a guide, not a guarantee. Always check the height range for the size, especially for online purchases.

2. Always sizing up

"He'll grow into it" is true in theory but means your child wears ill-fitting clothes for 3–6 months — and by the time it fits, the season has changed or the print has dated.

3. Ignoring fabric stretch

A cotton t-shirt with 5% elastane has very different size tolerance than a structured woven dress. Stretchy fabrics forgive size mistakes; structured ones don't.

4. Trusting Western size labels

US/EU sizes run larger than Indian sizes. A US "3T" is often closer to an Indian 4–5Y. If a brand uses non-Indian sizing, always check measurements, never trust the label alone.

5. Skipping the wash test

Always check if a fabric is pre-shrunk. Unshrunk cotton can lose 5–8% after the first wash — enough to take a 4–5Y down to a 3–4Y. (At Be Awara, all our fabrics are pre-shrunk before stitching, but it's worth asking any brand you buy from.)
